Two held after raid on oil plant

Two men from Northern Ireland were arrested last night after customs officers and armed gardai raided an oil-laundering operation at Glaslough in Co Monaghan.

Some 40,000 litres of product were seized and sources said that a "conservative estimate" would put the loss to the exchequer in the region of €4m a year.

The plant was less than 4km from the Border with Armagh and all the diesel being laundered there could only legally be used in agricultural vehicles.

Last night's operation was the latest in a series of raids targeting oil laundries just south of the Border.
