TWO women have died and a young man has been airlifted to hospital with head injuries following three separate road accidents.
Maura Porter (70) died in hospital six hours after being struck by a car close to her home in the Churchtown area of Carndonagh, Co Donegal.
A motorist in his 40s escaped injury when his car struck Mrs Porter. He raised the alarm just before 6pm on Monday and the mother of two was rushed to Altnagelvin Hospital in Derry where she died just before midnight. She was the 13th person to die on Donegal's roads in 2013, bringing the national total for the year to 190.
"Mrs Porter was well-known in the area and often walked along that road, using a footpath on one side which is covered by street lighting," said the head of the Donegal Traffic Corps, Inspector Michael Harrison. "At some stage, however, Mrs Porter walked to the other side of the road which doesn't have a footpath and the accident happened there.
"We are trying to establish why she was there at the time."
He asked anyone who was in the area before the accident to contact gardai in Buncrana on 074 9320540.
Fianna Fail's Education spokesman Charlie McConalogue knew the dead woman.
"She was one of life's gentle people," said Mr McConalogue. "Maura was just a lovely woman and the whole community is devastated that she had died in this way, especially at this time of the year."
In Dublin, a 19-year-old had to be airlifted to hospital after sustaining head injuries in a cycling accident.
The teenager was believed to be cycling on a track at the back of St Ita's Hospital in Portrane in north county Dublin when he sustained the injuries.
The alarm was raised around 4.30pm and emergency services contacted the Irish Coast Guard helicopter to assist in a medical evacuation of the injured man.
Elsewhere, an 81-year-old woman from Castlebar, Co Mayo, has died in hospital after an accident that occurred on December 23.
The female pedestrian was struck by a car as she crossed the Pontoon Road in the town at about 1.30pm that day.
She was removed by ambulance to Mayo General Hospital but died there late on Monday evening. The accident is under investigation by gardai and witnesses are asked to contact Castlebar garda station on 094 9038200.
