Two men have been arrested after suspected explosive devices were seized in Dublin's north inner city.

The arrests occurred around 6pm in the Ballybough area of the capital.

Members of the elite Emergency Response Unit are on the scene and an Army Bomb Disposal unit has been requested.

The area was sealed off for a time but has now been re-opened.

It is believed that gardaí discovered semtex during a search of a vehicle earlier today.

In a statement gardaí said:

"As part of an on going operation into dissident republican activity Gardaí stopped and searched a vehicle on Spring Garden Street, Ballybough in the inner city at approximately 6pm this evening, Friday June 2, 2017 where two men were arrested.

"The arrested men are being detained at Clontarf Garda Station under the provisions of Section 30, of the Offences against the State Act 1939 as amended.

"Investigations are on going."
