THE home of TV3 star Alan Hughes was burgled while he was away on a holidays in Spain.

The presenter returned home from Barcelona yesterday to find that the house he shares with his husband, songwriter Karl Broderick, had been ransacked.

Mr Hughes told the Irish Independent that the couple had been posting pictures of their holiday on Facebook and he hoped they weren't targeted as a result of that.

"I hope we weren't deliberately targeted because of Facebook. I hope it was just a random thing," he said.

Mr Hughes described how the burglars had gone through every room in the house near Malahide, Co Dublin, after using a large brick to break through a sun room window at the rear of the house.

"I got in and Karl looked at the big rock on the ground, we were wondering what was going on. Then I looked around and just thought s***," Mr Hughes said, adding, "It was just a shock to see the big rock in the middle of the floor. We have been on holidays before and there would have been friends staying in the house. Who is to know they wouldn't have been staying there this time."

Among the items taken by the burglars were Mr Hughes's silver 2010-registered Lexus car, laptops, televisions, money and jewellery.

Most infuriating for Mr Broderick was that one of the stolen laptops contained new projects he had been working on.

"He has been on to IT people to see if there is any way to recover the files," Mr Hughes explained.

Gardai have at least one lead. The car was spotted at a petrol station in Balbriggan when the perpetrators filled the tank.

"The gardai are going to show us the CCTV footage to see if we recognise the guys," Mr Hughes said.

Despite the horrifying ordeal, Mr Hughes will return to his duties on TV3's 'Ireland AM' today. "I've had better days to be honest," he said last night.

However, he was glad that nobody had been hurt in the incident.

The burglary comes after former 'Coronation Street' actress Helen Flanagan's home in Cheshire was raided after she revealed on Twitter that her footballer boyfriend Scott Sinclair was away.

She was locked in a utility room by armed raiders during the terrifying ordeal earlier this week.
