Tripping the light fantastic

THOUSANDS of stargazers have flocked to Co Donegal to see the most spectacular display of the Northern Lights in years.

The Aurora Borealis is usually seen in Arctic areas but occasionally comes further south.

Inishowen and Fanad peninsulas in north Donegal have had glimpses of the lights in the past few years, but nothing like the display of yesterday, which was so good it was visible further south in counties Tyrone, Leitrim and Sligo.

And with Met Eireann predicting clear skies after midnight tonight and again tomorrow night, more huge crowds are expected.
