Trio nominated for literary honour

Author Colm Toibin is among the nominations

Three Irish authors have been nominated for the largest literary prize in the world for a novel published in English.

Works by Donal Ryan, Colm Toibin and David Park are among 152 titles in the running for the 100,000 euro International Impac Dublin Literary Award.

Launching the 2014 award, Dublin Lord Mayor Oisin Quinn, said the event promotes world literature and Irish writing internationally.

"This prestigious award enhances the city's worldwide reputation as a literary destination," he said.

"Readers at home and abroad will find new books and new authors on the longlist, and they can pit themselves against the international panel of judges and pick their own favourite."

The Spinning Heart by Ryan was nominated by Cork City Libraries and by Dublin City Public Libraries, while Toibin's The Testament of Mary was nominated by Bibliotheque Municipale de Mulhouse, France and by Winnipeg Public Library in Canada.

The Light of Amsterdam, by Northern Irish writer Park, was nominated by Tampere City Library, Finland.

Other nominations by libraries in 110 cities and 39 countries include 51 American works, 23 British, 11 Canadian novels and 41 novels in translation.

The shortlist will be made public on April 9 and the winner announced on June 12.

Most recent previous winners include Kevin Barry, Jon McGregor and Colum McCann.

The judging panel includes Irish author Catherine Dunne, Malaysian novelist Tash Aw, British novelist and Professor Giles Foden, Maya Jaggi, award winning cultural journalist and critic for Guardian Review, and Maciej Swierkocki, Polish translator, critic, scriptwriter, novelist and editor.
