Tributes paid to 'brilliant' journalist Gerald Barry

TRIBUTES were paid last night to RTE journalist Gerald Barry who died after a lengthy illness aged 63.

Managing director of RTE News Ed Mulhall described him as a "superb journalist with a razor-sharp mind, a brilliant memory and a forensic attention to detail".

He joined RTE as a newsroom reporter in 1970 and was appointed deputy editor in News/Features in 1978, before being appointed editor four years later.

Mr Barry resigned from RTE in 1983 to take up the position of deputy editor of the 'Sunday Tribune' which he held for 12 years. He rejoined RTE in 1995 as editor and presenter of 'This Week' on Radio 1 until January last year.
