Tributes paid as retired Supreme Court Judge Mr Justice Frank Griffin dies aged 97

Retired Supreme Court Judge Mr Justice Frank Griffin has died aged 97.

The Chief Justice Mrs Justice Susan Denham today said she learned with sadness of the death of Judge Griffin.


In a statement, the Chief Justice said: “He was a distinguished man, with great warmth and character.  He married his great intellectual ability with common sense.”

Mr Justice Griffin chaired the Special Criminal Court during a difficult time in Irish history (1972-73).

He was a Judge of the High Court from 1971-73 and Supreme Court from 1973 – 1991.

The Chief Justice said: “He had a long and distinguished legal career. He will be remembered for his dignity as a member of the Judiciary. He has left a distinguished legacy of many judgments on significant constitutional issues.”


“I extend my condolences to his family and I know he took great joy in their company during his very long and fulfilling retirement. His son Gerard is a current member of the Circuit Court.”
