Tribute to tragic climber scoops Sundance gong

AN Irish documentary about the K2 mountain tragedy in which Limerickman Ger McDonnell lost his life has won an award at the Sundance Film Festival.

'The Summit' was announced the winner in the Editing Award: World Cinema category at a ceremony in Park City, Utah, in the early hours of yesterday morning Irish time.

Director/producer Nick Ryan, picking up the award of behalf of editor Ben Stark, said it was a "great honour".

The film tells the story of 24 climbers involved in the 2008 K2 climbing disaster in which 11 climbers died.

It is due to be screened during the Jameson Dublin International Film Festival at The Savoy Cinema on February 24.
