Treatment of De Bruin 'a disgrace'
One of Ireland's greatest athletes says the treatment of Michelle De Bruin by the Irish public has been a disgrace and she is "our greatest Olympian".
Senator Eamonn Coghlan said the fact that she never failed a drugs test left the swimmer at the top of the pile of our Olympians.
Ms De Bruin won three golds and a bronze at the Atlanta Games in 1996, but was discredited after being found guilty of tampering with a urine sample.
"Let's remember she never, ever, tested positive, particularly during her Olympic year," he said.
Mr Coghlan was speaking before being honoured yesterday with the distinguished fellowship of Athlone Institute of Technology along with fellow Irish Olympic athlete Sonia O'Sullivan.
