People with a long-term disability who get a job can now keep their free travel pass for five years, Social Protection Minister Leo Varadkar has announced.

It will also be made easier for them to hold on to a medical card with a more generous means test.

He said these are the first steps in implementing the recommendations of a major new report 'Make Work Pay'.

It aims to reduce barriers for people with a disability who want to get a job and end the disincentive caused by a loss of vital State supports.

Mr Varadkar launched the report with Health Minister Simon Harris and Disability Minister Finian McGrath.

He also said a fast-track return of a disability allowance or invalidity pension is guaranteed for people where employment does not work out.
