Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni flew in from Italy to help a junior football club celebrate its 125th anniversary at the weekend.

The 71-year-old was the special guest at the Clones Town FC gala banquet at the Hotel Kilmore in Co Cavan.

There were more than 400 people at the black-tie affair and tickets cost €100 a head.

Trapattoni said he was "very happy" to be there. "It's a great achievement for any club to last for 125 years," he added.

Club spokesman Martin Shannon said the Irish manager seemed to enjoy himself.

"He went down a storm. The people loved him -- he's just so charismatic. He was very patient with everything. He was signing autographs and posing for pictures," Mr Shannon said.

Trapattoni also made presentations to club members at the event.

Mr Shannon said the "substantial" proceeds of the event would go toward buying land for the club, "so we won't have to rent pitches ever again".
