Detectives have begun investigating the death of a young Irish mother and her seven-year-old son in London.

Police were called to a house in The Fairway, Ruislip, in west London, about 10.50am on Wednesday amid concerns for the welfare of the mother, identified as Sinéad Higgins, originally from Aughagower, Westport, Co Mayo.

After forcing their way into the home, they found the bodies of Ms Higgins - believed to be aged 37 - and her son Oisín O'Driscoll (7) inside, according to the Metropolitan Police.

Officers said last night they were not looking for anyone else in connection with the deaths.
