A MAN has died just weeks before his wedding after he fell down a stairwell.

Pauraic Kiernan (33) from Carrickaboy, Co Cavan died after the accident in ‘The Imperial Bar’ in Cavan which occurred just over a week ago.

It is understood that his wedding was due to take place in four weeks time.

It is believed he fell down the stairs in the pub shortly after the Cavan v Fermanagh match on Sunday 14 July and was rushed to Beaumont hospital in Dublin.

He passed away on Friday in the Intensive Care Unit.

A post mortem examination confirmed that his injuries were consistent with a fall.

His parents, Matt and Mary, are being comforted by family and friends.

Matt is heavily involved with the local Denn GAA club where Pauraic played as a school boy.

Close friend of the family, Gerry Murray, who also works as a local councillor, said Pauraic parent’s are still trying to come to terms with the tragedy.

“Pauraic was home from abroad to make preparations for his upcoming wedding.

“He initially appeared to be making a recovery so his death is a big shock,” Mr Murray said.

Funeral arrangements are still being finalised.

Pauric played underage football with his local club Denn GAA before going to college.

He moved to Birmingham approximately eight years ago, and got engaged to an Irishwoman there.

It’s understood Pauric travelled home to watch the match between his home county Cavan and Fermanagh in Round Two of the All-Ireland football qualifiers.

After the match, he had an accident and fell down some stairs.

Denn GAA chairman Cathal Reilly said the Kiernan family are well known within the club and the wider community in Carrickaboy.

“As a mark of respect, we have cancelled the festival and activities until the burial,” Mr Reilly said.

“The club and Pauric’s family go back a very, very long way. They are highly respected – and the club’s thoughts are with the family.

“The community is shocked,” Mr Reilly added.

His father Matt is a Treasurer with the Cavan County Youth Board.

His parents Matt, Mary and his brother and sister are devastated by his loss.

This is the second tragedy to hit Denn GAA club in recent weeks.

In June, former player Gary Martin (27) died as a result of an accident during a stag party in Newcastle.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Pauric’s family. The club and community are in shock,” Club PRO Carina McGinnell said.
