Suicide distress calls

Six in 10 people who texted the Dublin Samaritans last year had suicidal feelings, highlighting the state of extreme distress they were feeling.

And one in three people who texted the emotional support charity was seeking help for self-harm, a three-fold increase compared to the previous year. Around 89pc of the 1,958 texts came from women, the organisation's annual report revealed. Its helpline number is 1850 60 90 90.

McGuinness honoured

ALL-IRELAND winning football manager Jim McGuinness has been honoured as the Donegal Person of the Year.

The 39-year-old follows the likes of past recipients – playwright Brien Friel, Daniel O'Donnell and Brian and Sean McEniff. McGuinness was awarded with the 2012 title at a ceremony in Dublin's Mansion House last night.

CAO applications rise

CAO applications are up on this time last year, at 58,361.

The discount for early applications, which applied up until Sunday, is probably a major factor. The normal application closing date is February 1 and from now on the fee is €40, compared with the early online application fee of €25.
