THE city of Kilkenny is to hold a tenth festival in its annual schedule by adding a new Trad Fest to the calendar.

The event was launched as part of the city's programme for The Gathering and will involve the grounds of Kilkenny Castle being transformed into the country's biggest traditional music venue over St Patrick's weekend in March.

Thousands of people are expected to descend on the marble city for the festival, which will feature some of Ireland's best-known musicians, including Seamus Begley and local resident Iarla O Lionaird with friends, including world-renowned fiddle player Martin Hayes and American guitarist Dennis Cahill.

While much of the action will be in Kilkenny Castle Park and in the historic castle itself, local pubs and restaurants will also be getting into the spirit of things with music on their menus as part of a Trad Trail.
