Town praises 'political hero'

Eoghan MacConnell

FORMER Minister of State Willie Penrose has been hailed as a hero in Mullingar for resigning in protest over the closure of Columb Barracks.

Describing Mr Penrose as a "political hero", Labour councillor Dan McCarthy said local Westmeath Labour councillors would stand by the former minister.

Mr Penrose's brother, Cllr Johnnie Penrose, said the closure wouldn't save any money. "It's a sad day for the midlands and a very sad day for Westmeath," he added.

Family members whose relations are serving in Columb Barracks gathered outside the facility yesterday. They were annoyed that their families were only told about the decision after it was announced.
