A senior GAA figure in Munster was arrested yesterday after allegations of sexual assault were made against him.
The man, aged in his 50s, was arrested at his home, a garda spokesman confirmed.
The man, who is married with children, is being held under Section Four of the Criminal Justice Act. It is understood the well-known and highly respected GAA figure is being questioned about allegations of sexual assault against two girls.
"I would like to stress that these are allegations at this stage," a garda source said.
It is believed the alleged offences date back to the 1990s.
Gardai can question the man for a 12-hour period and can then apply to the courts to extend his detention for a maximum 24 hours.
