Top civil servant McCarthy out in July

Michael Brennan Deputy Political Editor

THE country's most powerful civil servant -- who was a constant presence at the side of Taoiseach Brian Cowen and his predecessor Bertie Ahern -- is due to finish his term of office in four months' time.

Dermot McCarthy (56), who has an annual salary of €214,000 a year, has a dual role as secretary general of the Department of the Taoiseach and secretary general to the Government.

"People of my generation and older . . . suddenly had a decade or more of real success," he told the 'Financial Times' last year.

"To find that was all built on shaky foundations, that people who should have done better by us didn't, was all a huge shock," he said.

He did not comment when asked by the Irish Independent who he was referring to when he talked about "people who should have done better by us".
