KAMAL Ibrahim was back home in Limerick last week after his triumphant win in the Mr World contest in South Korea.

Aged 24, Kamal received the title last weekend, then went home to Thomondgate on the northside of Limerick city to celebrate with his partner, family and friends.

The son of an Italian mother and a Nigerian father, Kamal is delighted with the award. "There were smiles and laughter and I tried to hold myself together as best I could," he said.

"The only thing I remember feeling was an enormous sense of pride.

"I have never been so happy and proud to be Irish -- it was an amazing feeling.

"I won it for Limerick and Ireland," he said.

Kamal walked away from the 17-day contest with a cash prize of $50,000 (€37,000) and the prospect of several lucrative modelling contracts.

  • Unfortunately, last week, the picture of the Northern Ireland entrant in the Mr World competition, Matthew Poole, was used in place of that of Mr Ibrahim. We apologise to both men.
