An off-licence owner who fought of a thief with an umbrella has said locals have taken to calling him 'John Steed', a character from the popular sixties TV show 'The Avengers' who dispatched baddies with a bolly.
Tipperary man Pat Keller was called back to his store in Nenagh after a concerned neighbour called to tell him a man was trying to break into its storage cage.
CCTV footage shows the moment when Mr Keller attacked the would-be keg thief with an umbrella.
Confronting the man, the businessman can been seen lashing out with his bolly.
Panicked by the attack, the youth, who was armed with a hammer, fled.
"When I arrived he was trying to beat open the lock with a hammer... [and] I went up to him and asked him what he was doing," he said.
"He tried to take off so I just hit him a clout with the umbrella and he was gone.”
The businessman told The Irish Sun that the incident had sparked a joke among local residents, who have taken to comparing him to the bowler-hat wearing character played by Patrick Macnee in the cult classic 'The Avengers'.
"They’ve started calling me 'Steed' from [the show] because of the umbrella. It’s the only thing I could find,” Mr Keller said.
“I left immediately, grabbing the closest thing I could find - which was the umbrella."
"The adrenaline takes over in those situations - you really don’t think about it until after.”
Mr Keller posted the CCTV footage of the incident on his Facebook page in the hope that the thief could be identified.
He told the Irish Sun, that within 30 minutes, he had received a number of calls and messages from people who said they recognised the would-be thief.
Gardai told Independent.ie that they had reviewed the footage and were following "a line of inquiry".
