Tickets please: Minster says bus and rail hikes coming

Rosemary O’Grady

Bus and rail fare increases and a reduction in services are coming down the line, Minister for Transport Leo Varadkar warned today.

The Minister said that with CIE losing €50m a year and needing a Government cash injection of €700m, the only question was what percentage increase public transport users face.

With passenger numbers falling he also warned of further Government cutbacks to the national carrier saying it would depend on their finding further cost efficiencies.

Emphasizing the importance of getting more people on to public transport and reducing costs, Mr. Varadkar spoke of the 'big challenges ahead" facing the company.

A new corporate structure is being implemented with four separate chairs and the Minister believes that this is the way forward for CIE.
