Fionnan Sheahan THREE Fianna Fail candidates are formally seeking to be the Taoiseach's running mate in the next general election.
Fianna Fail is expecting a strong challenge from Sinn Fein MEP Mary-Lou McDonald in Bertie Ahern's Dublin Central constituency.
The highly-anticipated Fianna Fail selection convention in the constituency is being held tonight.
Senator Cyprian Brady, Cllr Mary Fitzpatrick and Cllr Tom Stafford have all been nominated to contest the convention, along with Mr Ahern.
But it is not yet clear how many candidates will be selected at the convention in Mr Ahern's heartland.
A Fianna Fail party source said: "The decision on the numbers will be taken by Brian Cowen's constituency committee."
One of Mr Ahern's chief local workers for many years, Senator Brady runs the constituency office at St Luke's in Drumcondra and was a nominee of the Taoiseach to the Seanad in 2002. His brother Royston Brady was the FF candidate in the European elections.
