THREE pipe bombs that were found in Tallaght overnight have been made safe by the army bomb squad.

A member of the public discovered the three improvised explosive devices in a green area of the Cushlawn estate yesterday evening.

Gardai then called the army explosive ordnance disposal division after inspecting the suspect devices.

The bomb squad arrived at the scene at 8.30 pm and examined the bombs.

Several nearby houses were evacuated while the operation to deal with the devices was underway.

The pipe bombs were deemed to be viable and were rendered safe at the scene before 10pm without the need for a controlled explosion.

An army spokesman said the components of the devices have been handed over to gardaí to assist with their investigation into the incident.

This was the 23rd call out of an Bomb Disposal Team in 2014 dealing with 10 viable devices so far this year.
