THREE young boys are lucky to be alive today after they found a loaded gun in a disused house and fired it.
The shocking incident happened in a Longford housing estate when the 8-year-old boys were playing in the garden of the house in Palace Crescent.
It is understood the boys found the gun concealed somewhere in the garden.
As they examined the weapon one of the boys fired it, but luckily the boys were uninjured.
It is not clear if the young boy fired the weapon deliberately or if it went off accidentally while they were playing with it.
The weapon was seized by the gardaí at around 7.30pm and investigations are underway as to who hid it at the site and why.
Palace Crescent is an estate of around 35 houses that was built ten years ago, and local sources say it has been the centre of anti-social activity in recent years which resulted in the County Council erecting CCTV in the area.
“A lot of the houses would be rented, and there was a problem where vacant houses were targeted by people by stripped them of copper piping and left a terrible mess behind,” said one local source.
