Thousands of households in Co Kerry were left without water when a pump failed at a water treatment plant overnight.

The fault occurred at the Listowel Regional Water Treatment Plant in North Kerry last night.

Irish Water tankers have been deployed to the area and services have been maintained for nursing homes and hospitals in the area.

The water supply to customers in Listowel, Moyvane, Knockanure, Lisselton, Finuge, Lixnaw and surrounding areas is disrupted.

A replacement pump has been brought back on site and the reservoir is being refilled.

Bottled water is being distributed by Irish Water in the area, with the assistance of the Civil Defence.

"We are hoping that slowly over the day we can open up valves and restore water to different parts of the network," Margaret Attridge of Irish Water told RTE's Morning Ireland.
