THOUSANDS of motorists continue to risk their lives by tailgating trucks to avoid a €3 toll, writes Paul Melia.
More than 2,000 people a month are being caught on camera driving just four feet behind heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) to avoid paying the toll on Dublin's M50 motorway.
Last February gardai revealed that more than 12,000 motorists a month were captured tailgating on camera.
A crackdown has led to an 83pc reduction, with some 140 motorists stopped and issued with an on-the-spot €80 fine and two penalty points. However, 2,083 vehicles were caught tailgating last month, more than 500 a week.
The Road Safety Authority warned motorists were putting their lives, and others, at risk.
