Thousands still registering for property tax

THOUSANDS of homeowners are still registering for the property tax – even after the deadline has closed – to avoid Revenue taking the levy from their paycheques.

The deadline for registering for the tax was extended before eventually closing at eight o'clock on Wednesday night, but people have still been registering since then.

Around 7,500 returns have been filed since the deadline closed, the majority of which were call-backs by the property tax helpline completing over-the-phone returns. Although the deadline has passed, homeowners can still file returns online, but they will have to pay the entire charge upfront.

Anyone who registered on time had a number of payment options, including extending the tax out over a longer period.
