Thousands of gifts were piled high yesterday in front of the nativity crib in Dublin's Pro-Cathedral, all donated anonymously since Christmas day.

The administrator of the Pro-Cathedral, Fr Damian O'Reilly, said he was overwhelmed.

"Everybody is in the same boat this year, nobody has much to spare, but I think the generosity of the public has been fantastic," he said.

As Fr O'Reilly spoke, the interior of the church echoed with the singing of children, the Pro-Cathedral Nativity Choir who were practising for their concert this evening (Thursday) in aid of Temple Street Children's Hospital.

All the gifts are presented to the Catholic charity Crosscare and the cathedral will pass-on any gifts left with it until Sunday.
