There will be no revolt, says Cowen

Michael Brennan and Eoghan MacConnell

TAOISEACH Brian Cowen last night rubbished claims that disgruntled Fianna Fail backbenchers were planning a heave against him.

Speaking at a "green flag" launch at a primary school in his native Offaly, Mr Cowen denied Fianna Fail backbenchers were unhappy about the direction the Government was taking.

"No they're not. We have had a confidence motion last week. The party showed great discipline and unity of purpose," he insisted.

And he also dismissed reports in a Sunday newspaper that rebels in his party were in talks with Fine Gael backbenchers with a view to forming a new political party.

Mr Cowen said the Government would be getting on with the "difficult job" it had to do.
