St Joseph's College in Summerhill, Athlone, Co Westmeath, will lose a fifth of its teaching staff as a result of the redeployment scheme.
Principal Liam Nally (left) inherited an extra eight teachers when he took over the top job in the 400-pupil school two years ago.
The school, which is regarded as one of the best in the midlands, has 37 staff, including the surplus eight who were, ironically, originally deployed to reduce class sizes. This occurred because of fluctuations in enrolment over the years and changes in Department of Education policy on staff posts.
But there was no pressure to release the eight teachers for redeployment until now. The principal has had to chose who will go to other schools.
"It will be difficult on some of them," he told the Irish Independent. "But it won't all happen in one fell swoop."
