A spokesman for the Taoiseach said that Mr Cowen had been in a number of private meetings at his department and elsewhere last week, but declined as a matter of policy to reveal how many of these meetings had taken place and on what days.

A spokeswoman for the minister said the Department of Social Protection was not co-ordinating Mr O Cuiv's official ministerial diary during the election campaign. Contacted directly by the Sunday Independent, Mr O Cuiv questioned the relevance of our inquiries.

"I don't see the relevance. If you're worried if I'm looking after my departments, I can tell you I'm spending a considerable amount of my time each day dealing with each of them. Most of the work is office work," Mr O Cuiv said.
