Terrifying moment motorist avoids hitting toddler wandering across busy road

Sue Doherty

A toddler had a lucky escape on Wednesday when he wandered across a very busy road in Northern Ireland.

Dashcam footage was recorded by the horrified motorist, who just managed to stop in time to avoid the tot.

The driver said he was travelling at 29mph.

"I was in complete shock," the driver told the Belfast Telegraph.

"Thank God something else had caught my eye and I had slowed down to look at it. I was just about to speed up again when this little child ran out on the road."

The near miss happened on Wednesday, June 21, on a popular route near the Antrim coast.

"I was still in shock last night, to be honest," the driver said.

He's sharing the footage as a warning to parents, babysitters and other motorists.

"I just want to remind everyone how quickly something terrible can happen. It only takes a second."
