Terrified woman hid in wardrobe as thieves raided her home

A TERRIFIED woman hid in a wardrobe while masked raiders searched her house for valuables.

The woman was not discovered by the raiders who broke into her house during the day in Co Galway.

She was alone in her home in Cregboy, Claregalway when she spotted a number of individuals wearing balaclavas outside her house.

At least one of the masked raiders got up onto the roof and disabled the alarm system leaving the woman isolated inside. Her husband had earlier left to go to work.

The frantic woman ran and hid in a walk-in wardrobe, but was not discovered by the raiders who made a quick getaway after a brief search of the house.

Gardai have not disclosed what valuables were taken in the raid.

Details of the incident, which happened last week, emerged at a meeting of the County Galway Joint Policing Committee yesterday.

“The poor woman was and is traumatised. It was an awful experience for her and this happened in broad daylight, before noon”, said local Councillor Jim Cuddy.

Chief Superintendent Tom Curley of Galway said that certain trends were evident with regard to robberies during daylight hours.

But he was reluctant to give specific details which could be used for the advantage of criminals in the future.

The garda investigation into the incident is continuing.
