IT WAS a family affair as descendants of one of Ireland's greatest ever tenors has helped launch a €10 coin specially commissioned in his honour.
John Count McCormack's great-grandson Jonathan Tinne, and two of the tenor's great-great-grandchildren were at the Central Bank of Ireland to launch the limited edition coin yesterday.
The collector's coin is being released as part of the European Silver Programme, which is honouring 'European Musicians' this year.
The silver €10 coin will be available to purchase from the Central Bank today and costs €44. There are a mere 8,000 units of the limited edition collector's piece available, and it weighs less than 30g.
The coin was designed by Michael Guilfoyle and includes a portrait of the famous Irish tenor who died 69 years ago.
