Ten arrested after weapons brawl

Brendan Farrelly

GARDAI recovered an array of weapons including slash hooks, golf clubs, pick-axe handles and baseball bats when they broke up a street brawl yesterday involving up to 30 people.

Mayhem broke out shortly before 2pm when rival gangs clashed on Colepark Road, Ballyfermot, Dublin.

A cruising patrol car spotted the mass of people just as the fight erupted and called for back-up. Gardai succeeded in breaking the brawl up. When it was over, they were left with the frightening haul of weapons.

No one was seriously injured, but a 29-year-old man was taken to St James's Hospital with a shoulder injury.

Most of those involved had Ballyfermot addresses but some were also from Tallaght and Rialto. Their ages ranged from the late teens to late 20s.

A total of 10 people were arrested, and all were still being held last night.
