Teens warned about meningitis
A campaign to warn students of the signs of a disease that can kill within hours launched yesterday.
The Meningitis Research Foundation (MRF) revealed that one-in-10 young people has not heard of the illness, that can leave survivors with brain damage, deafness and multiple amputations.
The charity wants teens, who are the second highest at-risk group for contracting meningitis, to recognise the symptoms, which are similar to the flu or a hangover.
The campaign is being backed by broadcaster Claire Byrne who was given the last rites when she was struck by the disease in 1990.
