Teens make mark
SCHOOLBOY brothers Ronan and Conor McGarvey, who make pens from wood in their back garden, have breached the toughest security ring in Ireland and written the deal of their young business lives.
President Barack Obama, his wife Michelle and their daughters Malia and Sasha will receive gifts of pens made from Donegal bog oak and ash when they are in Ireland.
Ronan (16) and Conor (13), from Loughanure in the west Donegal Gaeltacht, plotted to target G8 leaders for pen gifts when they scored a hit with the RTE Dragons in 'Junior Dragon's Den' last month.
They wrote to the Lough Erne Resort near Enniskillen and to embassies of the G8 leaders offering gift packs. And on Wednesday, Ronan took a call from the US authorities. They needed the gift at the Consulate by Friday to make sure it would be delivered to Mr Obama during the G8 summit today and Tuesday.
Ronan said: "We had given up on our offer but then we got the call. We would have loved to put a special inscription on the president's pen but we just didn't have the time. We managed to make up a special presentation wooden bowl with a pen for each member of the family standing in it."
HIGH HOPES FOR SUN
THE man who runs the Lough Erne Resort in Co Fermanagh where today's G8 summit is taking place has revealed that he has buried a Child of Prague on the grounds of the 16th century hotel in the hope of fine weather.
Ferghal Purcell (53), who previously ran Aherlow House Hotel in Co Tipperary, said: ''We're hoping for a little divine intervention to ensure the sun shines down on the resort for the duration of the summit.''
