Another man was seriously hurt.

A garda spokesman said: "An altercation between a number of youths resulted in two males (in their 20s) receiving stab injuries.

"Both males were taken to St James Hospital where one of the males was in a critical condition.

"He was later pronounced dead. The other male is serious but stable."

The arrest took place shortly after midday in the Dublin area and the male teenager is being detained at Kevin Street garda station, gardai said.

The scene has been preserved for a technical examination.

Gardai in Kilmainham are appealing for witnesses who may have seen or heard the incident or who may have any information to contact them.
