A 14-year-old girl has been killed in an overnight car crash in Co Kerry.

The victim was a passenger in a car being driven by a 20-year-old woman which crashed into a ditch after leaving the road at Castleisland.

The accident happened at 11.25pm three miles from Scartaglen.

The driver and a 18 month girl who was also in the car were taken to Tralee General Hospital where their injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

The road was closed to facilitate a Garda Forensic Collision examination.

Gardai are appealing for witnesses to contact Castleisland Garda Station on 066-7163090, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.

Meanwhile a woman is fighting for her life after a crash in Dundalk in which a van she was a passenger in left the road and struck a pillar.

The 34-year-old victim was rushed to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda after the crash on the Doylesfort Road at 9.30pm last night.

She was later transferred by ambulance to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin for emergency surgery.

The driver of the van was treated for injuries at to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda.

The road was closed to facilitate a Garda Forensic Collision examination.
