The friends, named locally as Jamie Lee (19) and Claudia Govea (18) from Narraghmore, Kilcullen, Co Kildare, were killed when the car they were travelling in was in collision with another vehicle.

The accident happened shortly before 3pm on Saturday at Brownstown, Kilcullen.

Two women, believed to be in their 30s, in the second car were taken to Naas General Hospital.

"Conditions on the roads yesterday were absolutely horrendous all day," said local Fianna Fail councillor Martin Miley Jnr.

"The entire community is devastated by this. It is a very difficult time. Our thoughts and prayers are with both families at this time."

Anyone with any information on the accident is asked to contact the gardai at Naas on (045) 884300.
