Technology bypass: Almost half of all garda stations have no internet access
ALMOST half of Ireland’s garda stations have no internet or email access.
The shocking statistic – 300 out of 703 stations are technology free – is contained in a reply to a parliamentary question by Fianna Fáil Justice Spokesperson, Dara Calleary.
Minister for Justice Alan Shatter said that even though not all stations were networked, they could all use secure voice communications to carry out operational requirements.
The Department of Justice and Equality issued a statement pointing out that the provision of information technology facilities is an operational matter for the Garda Commissioner and not for the Minister for Justice.
The statement pointed out that this was the position throughout 14 years of continuous Fianna Fáil led government and remains the position today.
