Tears by the roadside as family, friends and neighbours grieve for lost sisters

Barry Duggan

AMONG the many floral tributes along the roadside where two little sisters died was a collection of small, colourful teddy bears.

Throughout the day, relations, neighbours and friends of Kate (2) and Grace (12 weeks) Gilmore arrived at the spot on the N17 route where Sunday's tragic accident occurred.

Some broke down in tears as they stood over the growing pile of flowers, soft toys and messages of condolence.

This was the last place the two sisters were together with their father, and by yesterday afternoon the collection of mementoes at the scene reflected the depth of feeling across north Galway.

Candles, flowers and notes were placed together at the spot where off-duty ambulance personnel battled to save the sisters' lives as their father looked on helplessly.

"Kate and Grace, thanks for the beautiful memories in Lanzarote last week, we will never forget ye," one tribute read.

Grieving parents John and Michelle come from two well-known families in Cortoon and Belclare, Co Galway. The two girls were their only children and both parents are said to be inconsolable.

Last night the community of Tuam fell silent as they brought their little angels home for the final time. They will be waked there until tomorrow's funeral.
