Teachers still largest profession among TDs

TEACHERS still make up the largest profession elected as TDs, a new book on the 2011 General Election reveals.
Dynasties took a blow after the decline of Fianna Fail with the number of children of former TDs elected being halved.
The defunct Progressive Democrats have more former members in the Oireachtas now than after their disastrous 2007 general election.
Although the number of primary and secondary teachers in the Dail has fallen marginally from 32 to 30, teaching is still by far the largest occupation among TDs, according to 'Nealon's Guide to the 31st Dail and 24th Seanad'.
Despite the clamour for more TDs with knowledge of economic affairs, the numbers from a business background actually only increased from 22 to 25.
The book also reveals the life after death for the PDs. "There are more former PDs in the 31st Dail then PDs elected in 2007 when the party was reduced to two seats," the book says.
The guide, edited by Stephen Collins, will be launched tonight by Taoiseach Enda Kenny in Leinster House.
