After expressing opposition to the closure of a local garda station earlier this week, Fine Gael Dublin South TD Peter Mathews was sitting beside Justice Minister Alan Shatter as he defended the decision.
Mr Shatter insisted his decision to close Stepaside garda station in his constituency will actually improve the policing service there.
"The freeing up of gardai from desk duties in Stepaside Garda station will increase the number of gardai available for front-line policing to the benefit of the community in Stepaside," he said.
Mr Mathews said afterwards he shared the concerns of residents in Stepaside about the closure but that the minister's reply might help to reduce some of the anxieties.
