Taxman on horns of €1.5m dilemma

THE Revenue Commissioners are still deciding what to do with rhino horns now worth €1.5m which were at the centre of a court case last week, writes Gordon Deegan.

At Ennis District Court, Co Clare, last Friday, two brothers were fined for the illegal importation of the eight 'aphrodisiac' rhino horns then worth almost €500,000 at Shannon Airport three years ago.

Local councillors in Clare want the horns to be given to the Clare County Museum – but Revenue said no decision has yet been made.

A spokeswoman for Revenue said: "The horns are liable to forfeiture to the State and Revenue is currently considering what should be done with them."
