Taxi sector only group to strike in third quarter

STRIKING taxi drivers at Dublin Airport were the only group of workers in the State to take industrial action in the third quarter of the year.

The Central Statistics Office (CSO) said that 571 days were lost to industrial disputes between June and September, compared with 93 in the same period last year.

The strike action involved 400 taxi drivers at Dublin airport who mounted a two-day wildcat strike as authorities reduced the number of car parking spaces in an overflow area for drivers.

The dispute was later settled.

The CSO said that, overall, five disputes were in progress during the first nine months of the year involving 1,920 workers and resulting in 8,486 days lost. In 2011, 3,116 days were lost during a similar period.
