Taoiseach snubs media with interview

TAOISEACH Brian Cowen was criticised last night for avoiding "legitimate questions" from the media. Instead, he was interviewed by one of his own spindoctors.
He gave his sole interview about the visit of the highest level Chinese delegation for six years to the deputy government press secretary Mark Costigan yesterday -- and did not have to face any questions about the Chinese government's treatment of Falun Gong members protesting outside.
Fine Gael TD Denis Naughten said that doing interviews "behind closed doors" in government buildings with members of his own staff was not going to improve Mr Cowen's communications skills.
The interview was available on the website controlled by the Government, www.merrionstreet.ie.
Mr Costigan said it was the appropriate decision on the day. "There will be times when the Taoiseach might make remarks to Merrionstreet.ie."
