Taoiseach offers support to all staff at insurer
TAOISEACH Brian Cowen last night promised the Government would provide support to Quinn workers.
Enterprise Minister Batt O'Keeffe vowed to safeguard as many jobs as possible following the announcement of redundancies from administrators at Quinn Insurance.
Mr Cowen said no official decision had yet been conveyed to the Enterprise Minister on redundancies.
"Clearly we know the closing of the UK business in large measure is having its effect because it's such an important part of Quinn Insurance's business.
"I share the concerns that people have about this and obviously to try and bring some clarity and certainty to the situation as soon as possible is in the interest of all employees," he said.
"The minister will outline the Government's full response to redundancies in the Quinn Group which are expected to be announced by the administrators," Mr O'Keeffe's spokesman said.
However, he would not be drawn on whether a fund could be established to help the workers who lose their jobs.
Transport Minister Noel Dempsey said the Government wanted to try to protect as many jobs as possible but said it could not interfere in the administrative process or with the Financial Regulator.
