Taoiseach distances himself from former ministers’ lavish pensions

TAOISEACH Enda Kenny has distanced himself from the former Taoisigh and ministers who are taking their full laving pensions and not giving any back to the State.

The Irish Independent revealed former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern has been taking his full €150,000 a year pension since he left the Dail, after reversing his decision to give part of it back to the State.

Only seven out of 116 former ministers gave up part of their pensions last year, despite the introduction of a simple system for doing so.

None of the former Fianna Fail ministers who presided over the economic crash gave up any part of their pensions.

Sinn Fein deputy leader Mary-Lou McDonald asked when the Government was going to tackle the "gilt-edged pension of former Taoisigh and ministers".

Mr Kenny said the Government made decisions in the Budget to impact those of former salaries, including pension relief.

"As for the former ministers, I don't speak for them," he said.

Mr Kenny added he heard the names of those who are giving up part of their pension.
